Supervision



 

Supervision is a meeting  between a trained and qualified Supervisor and one or more employees (known as a supervisee). This is called a working alliance.  Supervision can be offered to a group or an individual. A contract is then made between the Supervisor and the supervisee(s) to arrange a  convenient and regular time and place to meet. This may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly. This important structure forms the boundaries for safe, supportive and confidential supervision. The Supervisee presents an account of their work in order to receive guidance, support and an opportunity to reflect. They can then be helped by an experienced practitioner to view the situation they find themselves in by exploring alternatives, which may offer a new perspective. Supervisees are encouraged to use the skills they have to problem solve.

Supervision is also educative, helping the supervisee to explore and expand on their work. Through feedback and appraisal, the Supervisor can monitor their personal and professional development . Supervision can also be administrative, ensuring that the supervisee works within their organisation's policies.
